Canine Athletic Zone

The Canine Athletic Zone is a Non-Referral program available to dogs that meet

 the following criteria:

1. Must be between the ages of 14 months and 8 years.

2. Must have no current medical problems or injuries.

3, Must be examined by our veterinarian prior to starting the program to ensure the pet is healthy prior to enrollment.

Sporting and working dogs are unique in that they have more strenuous physical demands placed on them. A proper fitness and conditioning program will maximize the physical potential of these dogs and minimize the chance of injury. The Canine Athletic Zone will focus on the following training components:

 · Strength

· Proprioception

· Flexibility & Stretching

· Warm up & Cool Down

 Endurance and CrossTraining

To prevent fatigue the focus needs to be on exercises that increase indurance and stamina. The increased blood flow to muscles enables them to work more effeciently and store more glycogen. Cross training helps reduce injury from repetitive action of sport specific training. Underwater treadmill and land treadmill are useful tools to help build endurance.

Strength Training

Strength training is crucial when it comes to jumping and running. Our focus needs to be on developing the musculature of the limbs and core muscles of the abdomen and back. Strong core muscles protect the spine from stress and help transfer power smoothly from the back to front. Tools that may be used include exercises that focus on hind end strengthening, wobble boards and exercise balls for core strengthening.

Proprioception Training

Dogs need to coordinate their front and back halves for the maximum accuracy of movements demanded by agility sports. Tools that may be used include cavalettis, pebble mat and exercises that focus on co-ordination.

 Flexibility and Stretching

Flexibility prevents injury to joints and improves mobility.   Passive/active range of motion and stretching exercises are useful to promote flexibility and mobility.

Warm Up and Cool Down

A good warm up routine will increase circulation to muscles to improves oxygen and nutrient delivery while stretching muscles and tendons to prevent injury. It also prepares the body for the upcoming event . Cooling down will enhance removal of metabolic waste and reduce heart rate in a controlled manner. The use of Cryotherapy will help reduce inflammation and prevent stiffness.
